Shepparton United hardly broke a sweat against second-placed Moama in the Goulburn Murray Women’s and Girls League seniors penultimate round, fending off the Mowers by 23 points at Wanganui Oval under Friday night lights.
Moama seem the likely challenger to the GMWGL throne, its only losses this year coming at the hands of the invincible United.
But even still, the Demons were unfazed on its way to victory, playing in cruise control and then pulling away when it mattered most to claim a 6.2 (38) to 2.3 (15) victory.
It was an improved effort by Moama compared to its round two 50-point defeat to Shepparton United, but it will take a special effort on grand final day to hold back the well-drilled women at Deakin Reserve from successive premierships.
The top four for the finals is already set, Cobram four wins ahead of fifth-placed Nathalia.
Following forfeit wins over Tatura and Rumbalara at the weekend, Cobram will need to beat Moama and gain significant percentage if it is to leap above Mansfield into third, which is unlikely as the Eagles face the winless Shepparton Swans to close out its home and away year.
The Swans lost to Nathalia by 70 points on Sunday, displaying the Purples’ class despite their ladder position.
In the youth girls, Moama copped its first loss of the year to Shepparton United, who had returning Bushranger product Ashanti Walker in its line-up.
Cobram won via forfeit against Nathalia.
