The team won 5-3 on Sunday in a must win clash away against Castlemaine Gold.
Wanderers’ goalkeeper Matt Crothers said the Deni side controlled the match, but it was closer than it needed to be.
“It was a pretty good win.
“It wasn’t really back and forth, as we had most of the play.
“All three of their goals came from our mistakes.”
Crothers described difficult goalkeeping conditions, which he said added to tension on the pitch.
“We were 4-1 up, towards the end of the game. The one goal they scored I managed to block, but they kicked the ball out of my hands, which the referee couldn’t see.
“The quality of pitch wasn’t great due to the weather, which isn’t anyone’s fault, but diving damaged the grip on the gloves which were getting towards the end of their life.
“The third goal was a free kick, which I stopped but dropped right onto the goalscorers foot for a tap in with the lack of grip.
“That had us a little bit nervous, but the referee did allow me to go off and switch gloves, and thankfully we had enough goals in the end.”
Tomorrow the fourth placed Deni side host Castlemaine Green, who are fifth on the ladder, at Rotary Park from 2pm.
The result will play a large role in deciding the top four, with four matches remaining for Deniliquin.
Last time the two teams played in Castlemaine, the home team won 4-1.
However, after last weekend, Crothers said the team are looking forward to this week’s match.
“We’re feeling pretty confident. We have a couple of guys back in from last week.
“Last time we played them, we had a lot of the ball, and they had one strong, fast player they relied on.
“It was similar on the weekend, but we had Dipesh (Kandel) in a sweeper position, which worked well.
“Hopefully, we can have a repeat performance from the weekend and make the finals.”
