On Wednesday, May 13, local Lions paid a visit to Gnarly Neighbours to assess how they could support the organisation.
Club president Liz Johnson said the Lions had supported the organisation, founded by chief executive Jayden Sheridan, for years.
“Our club has known Jayden from the get-go, he came along as a guest speaker in the hope that our club could support his ideas and help to get them up and running with a donation,” Ms Johnson said.
“Our club has for years assisted the young people of our community. One of our ‘Lions Purposes’ is ‘to help those less fortunate’, and the young certainly fall into that category.
“Some of our members have seen what Jayden does for the younger community through our grandchildren. He is a legend to them and us.”
In the past, the club has supported Gnarly Neighbours through donations and assisting with events, and it intends to keep this up.
Ms Johnson said the club was more than happy to help such a great cause.
“The club was amazed at the artwork on the walls and how jam-packed their schedule is,” she said.
“It is a wonderful organisation for the youth and others within our town and surrounding areas.
“They not only provide skateboard lessons, but they also have creative workshops, social enterprise with their cafe, kids apparel and print shop.”
Outside of its support of Gnarly Neighbours, the club assists the community in a number of ways, including through its barbecues, bursaries for local schools and community grants.
It also hosts a soup night every Wednesday evening from February to the end of November to aid the Salvation Army, assists in disaster relief — and provides grants through its District Disaster Relief Trust — helps out with traveller’s aid at the Seymour train station, and supports those on the road through its Driver Reviver Rest Stops.
Ms Johnson said there was much to look forward to for the club in the coming months.
“We will have our Driver Reviver Rest Stop — free tea and coffee — out on the freeway between Avenel and Seymour over the King's Birthday weekend,” she said.
“(We’ll also have) a car boot sale, possibly in September — stay tuned for that.
“And, there is our annual China and Lace Afternoon Tea in November. The tickets sell out quickly to this each year.”
