The $40,000 funding, awarded through the government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, will support the development of a shire-wide active recreation strategy.
The funding is part of the latest round of the infrastructure fund, which will support 78 projects across Victoria, with more than $18.3 million allocated statewide.
State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes said the funding would support growing participation in local sport.
The 10-year plan will identify priority projects, improve access to facilities and support greater participation across the community.
Mayor Daniel Mackrell said the funding would help council take a long-term approach to planning.
“This funding allows council to take a strategic, long-term approach to recreational planning across the shire,” he said.
“The strategy will help us understand where investment is needed most, how we can improve access for all ages and abilities, and how we can better support participation across our diverse communities.”
The strategy will respond to changing participation trends, including growing demand for informal and flexible activities such as walking, cycling and outdoor fitness.
“Communities are telling us they want more flexible and accessible ways to stay active,” Cr Mackrell said.
“This work will ensure council is planning for contemporary recreation needs while making the most of existing spaces and infrastructure.”
The plan is also expected to strengthen council’s ability to secure future funding by providing a clear framework for investment.
Development of the strategy is expected to begin later this year, with community consultation to form a key part of the process.
