Water from Seymour, Kilmore, Euroa, Mansfield, Tatura and Kyabram wastewater management facilities will be released over the coming weeks.
The wastewater storage lagoons at these locations are reaching capacity, as a result of rainfall over the past couple of months.
From mid-July, releases will occur as required at each system, into Seymour’s Back Creek, Kilmore Creek, Castle Creek at Euroa, Fords Creek Mansfield, Mosquito Depression/Murray River Tatura and Coram drain/Yambuna Creek at Kyabram.
Releases are expected to be around 1ml to 4ml per day, depending on which waterway the release is happening at.
GVW’s wastewater and recycling coordinator Stuart Harris said discharging excess fully treated wastewater from storages helped to reduce any potential for uncontrolled overflows.
Mr Harris said releases would continue until climatic conditions improved and irrigation could begin at the facilities.
The water being released has been fully treated and meets Class C standards. GVW has informed the EPA of these releases and will monitor for any unexpected impacts on the environment.
Strict water quality monitoring processes remain in place to protect the health of local communities and environments.
