Victoria’s lakes and rivers have had an injection of 10 million fish in three of the past four years to improve recreational fishing opportunities.
Among the fish species stocked are brown trout, rainbow trout, chinook salmon and tiger trout, as well as native species, including Murray cod, golden perch, Australian bass, estuary perch, silver perch and dusky flathead.
The Victorian Budget 2026/27 includes $5 million to extend the popular program, which will also support the expanded Arcadia and Snobs Creek hatcheries, which produce Murray cod and golden perch fingerlings.
“Fish stocking brings people into our regional towns and gives families a fun, affordable reason to get outdoors and make some memories,” Victorian Outdoor Recreation Minister Enver Erdogan said.
“No other state comes close; 10 million fish in the next year shows Victoria is leading the way on fish stocking.”
The Arcadia hatchery will also be supported with the newly announced funding.

The Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery Visitor Centre, just south of Shepparton, acts as more than a hatchery that produces fingerlings, it also provides fishers a chance to experience fishing and learn about native fish production in Victoria.
Fishing is free at the centre’s fish-out pond, which is regularly stocked with Murray cod and silver perch.
The centre, in Ross Rd, Arcadia, is open seven days a week from 9am to 5pm outside daylight saving time and 5am to 10pm during daylight saving time.
