The Goorbils, which means koala in Taungurung, triumphed in division two of the annual Specialist Hoops Basketball Tournament in Bacchus Marsh on Wednesday, April 22.
The tournament is a highlight in the Victorian all-abilities basketball fixture schedule, pulling together teams from Melton, Gisborne, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury, Benalla and Seymour.
A late entry into the tournament and having no available subs on the day didn’t affect the Goorbils, who quickly pulled together two teams to compete.
Over 15 fast and fierce games, the team climbed the ladder to a thrilling grand final face-off against Specialist Hoops Orange team, which included players who regularly compete at a state level.
Over two 15-minute periods, both teams worked hard to make lightning-fast breaks, accurate passes, assists and rebounds, with the Goorbils ahead by a single point at the final whistle.
Goulburn Valley Gangarru Parasports executive director and head coach Simon Fox, who leads the Goorbils, said the win was one for the community.
“As a community-driven all-abilities basketball team, we take immense pride in Goorbils’ recent win,” he said.
“The commitment our players have shown through dedicated training and strong teamwork is reflected in this result.
“The Goorbils’ determination, resilience and pride have seen them grow into a force to be reckoned with, and this achievement belongs to the entire community that supports them.”
The Goorbils are supported by a partnership between Omnia Community Health and Goulburn Valley Gangarru Parasports.
The team comprises adults and young people, aged 12 and above, with intellectual or learning disabilities.
