The CDLBA became the CBD when the women and men bowlers amalgated. The future for CBD looks uncertain now, therefore, this may be the last time the Silver Tray will be contested.

Seymour VRI
With very warm weather at the weekend, Seymour VRI was fortunate to get through its pennant matches, although the club was forced to postpone its annual two-bowl triples tournament due to extreme heat forecasts last Sunday.
With four rounds remaining until finals and all sides still very much in contention, VRI can look forward to the end of the season with some certainty.
Unfortunately, the same certainty cannot be said for selectors who must now look at ensuring there are sufficient players qualified to represent the club in finals.
This may involve moving players around from side to side, ensuring options are available come finals. Players will need to look at the big picture over the coming weeks if they are selected in a different team or position over the next few weeks.
Selecting is a tough gig but “that’s why they get paid the big bikkies”.
CBD midweek pennant
Tuesday, January 19
Seymour 49 (4) lost to Seymour VRI 65 (12)
Seymour VRI continued its winning ways midweek with a solid 16-shot win away against highly-ranked Seymour. Despite narrow losses by two and three shots on two rinks it was the 21-shot win on the other that meant VRI recorded its second win in a row against a top-four side. Now just six points behind fourth-placed Wallan, VRI stays well within reach of possible finals contention.
With Greg Jones unavailable, Ian Cashill moved over to skip Jones’ rink of Geoff Dixon, Paul Rolfe and Jane Wilson and matched up against Wendy Hutton’s rink. The rink picked up six shots on the first four ends before dropping a single on the fifth. Getting wins on the next four ends, Cashill's rink had a handy nine-shot lead at the 14th end break. After the break, Cashill's rink dominated the remainder of the match, restricting Hutton's rink to three shots on two end wins before adding 15 shots from nine end wins to record a 19-shot win, 28-7.
After scoring a single on the first end, Mario Furletti’s rink of Jim Tuckwell, Bill Dawe and Moreno Puppa found itself trailing Robert “Biggles” Brown’s rink by four shots after five ends. Winning six of the next nine ends and adding 10 shots, Furletti's rink held a narrow one-shot lead at the 14th end break. The final 11 ends saw teams level on three occasions with scoring becoming difficult. Brown's rink managed a three on the penultimate end and, despite Furletti's single on the final end, it was enough to close the match, with VRI going down 19-21.
Joe Purcell’s rink of Kevin Cain, Garry Bester and Peter Delzotto was pitted against Dale Selleck’s rink which saw a neck-and-neck tussle over the first 14 ends, with Purcell's rink taking a two-shot lead in to the break. Purcell's rink extended its lead to three by end 17, but dropped the next four ends to trail by five after the 21st end, 14-19. Adding two shots on the next end reduced the margin to three for Purcell, but Selleck's rink added a further two shots on the next end to extend the lead back out to five. Purcell's rink won the remaining two ends, they only scored singles, with the final result a narrow three-shot loss for VRI, 18-21.
CBD weekend pennant
Division one
Seymour VRI 64 (4) lost to Kilmore 71 (12)
Playing at home, Seymour VRI led on two rinks by six shots at the 42-end break but with the other rink down by 10 shots, the club found itself trailing overall by four shots. Kilmore went on to win by seven shots. VRI remains in third place on the CBD ladder.
Mick Szczykulski’s rink of Moreno Puppa, Geoff Neal and Helen Flint had a close battle with the wily Phil Skehan’s rink. With both rinks winning seven ends each, Szczykulski’s rink had the narrowest of on-shot leads at the 14th end break. Skehan’s rink moved out to a five-shot lead after 17 ends, before Szczykulski’s rink broke away to a seven-shot lead with just two ends to play. Splitting the two ends, Szczykulski’s rink extended its final winning margin to eight for a 27-19 score line.
Greg Jones’ rink of Phil Challis, Bill Dawe and Wayne Noonan started brightly with a four on the first end against Trevor Young’s rink. But a two and three to Young found Jones trailing 4-5 after three ends. In a see-sawing match, the lead switched hands throughout the day, before Jones’ rink won by a single shot, 25-24.
Joe Purcell’s rink of Kevin Cain, Ian Cashill and Brad Anderson began poorly by dropping the first four ends to trail John Reiman’s rink 1-6 after the fifth end. Things did not improve over the next nine ends as Reiman’s rink extended its lead to 10 shots at the 14-end break. Purcell's rink reduced the margin to just seven shots at the 21st end but that was to be the end of it. Reiman’s rink won the final five ends to inflict a disappointing 12-28 defeat.
CBD division two
Kilmore 54 (0) lost to Seymour VRI 67 (16)
Playing away to second-ranked Kilmore it was another must win game for VRI against a higher-ranked side. The 42-end break saw VRI holding a 12-shot lead with all rinks up. With all rinks playing steady bowls following the break, VRI went on to record solid wins and secured a 13-shot overall win and third place on the CBD ladder.
Peter Delzotto’s reshaped rink of Terry Dowell, Brendan Challis and Jeff Rhue was matched against David Taffe’s rink. They found themselves level on four occasions in the first 13 ends before a three on the 14th end allowed VRI to go to the break with the lead. After the break Delzotto's rink won three ends before managing to secure only three of the last eight ends. But with Taffe's rink scoring only seven shots from five end wins, VRI secured a six-shot win, 24-18.
Wayne Flint again returned to the skipping role and, with Jim Tuckwell, Anthony Nachtigal and Jim Furletti, was slow out of the blocks to trail 1-5 after just five ends against Mark Hodgson’s rink. However, winning four of the next six ends gave Flint's rink a four-shot lead. Flint's rink maintained its lead for the rest of the game to win by four, 20-16.
Mario Furletti’s reshuffled rink of Mark Brett, Paul Rolfe, and Geoff Dixon appeared to draw the short straw against the experienced Warren Coyle’s rink with Matthew McMaster as his third. However, a great start saw Furletti's rink win eight of the 14 ends by the break, forging a four-shot lead, 14-10. Following the break Furletti's rink won a further five of the 11 ends to secure nine shots, while Coyle's rink won six ends for 10 shots. With scores level at 20-all with two ends remaining, the game was up for grabs and Furletti's rink managed to come away with a three-shot win, 23-20.
GVBD division six
Rushworth 25 (0) lost to Seymour VRI 70 (14)
An away win against Rushworth allowed Seymour VRI to retain top spot on the ladder for another week. VRI dominated and with a final result of big wins for both rinks, Seymour VRI ran out to a 45-shot overall win.
After dropping a single on the first end against Geoff Cruz’s rink, Garry Bester’s rink of Alan Walton, Darren Greive and Josh Austin lit the flame to win nine of the following 13 ends and establish a 10-shot lead at the 14th end break. Following the break, that 10-end margin rapidly increased to a 26-shot lead as Bester's rink won five ends straight to add a further 16 shots. Things were much quieter in the final six ends, which were split three ends apiece, as Bester's rink ran out a very comfortable 26-shot winner, 37-11.
Jane Wilson’s rink of Jeanette Anderson, Terry Flynn and Carol Harrop matched up against Karen Cruz’s rink. VRI scored five shots on the first three ends to establish a five-shot lead which it maintained through to the 14th end break. After the break, Wilson's rink lost just two of the ensuing 11 ends to record a generous 19-shot win, 33-14.
This week’s matches: With the Australia Day holiday, midweek will be at home to third-placed Eildon with a win needed to keep a top-four finish a reality.
Weekend pennant on Saturday will see CBD division one with the opportunity to move into second place with a good win over current second-placed Broadford - but at Broadford this could be a difficult assignment.
CBD division two will be at home against fourth-placed Broadford, with a win making third place safe for another week.
GVBD division six will be looking to extend its reign atop the ladder with an away game against third-placed Tatura-Hill Top, which remains just 16 points behind VRI.
Until next week.

The short road trip to Euroa resulted in a 16–105 to 2-81 win for Avenel.

Kate Donovan, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy and Josh McDonald (s) kept being challenged by the Euroa lads but a 10–3 score line after smoko firmed up the win, 26–17.
After being as much as 10 down in the second half, Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Howard Geldard and Brett McDonald (s) got within one shot of Euroa on end 21. However, Euroa won three of the last four ends to defeat Avenel 24-30.
Avenel remains in second place on the ladder, and with Seymour beating ladder-leader Kyabram on Saturday, only one point separates first and second. The next game for Avenel is against East Shepparton Lime 1 at home.
Division six hosted Nagambie with the win going the way of the Lakers, 13–46 to 1–43.
Joyce White, Fay Hateley, Glen Bell and Norm Billingsley (s) were 10 down at the break, but came out firing with a five on the first end back. Nagambie quickly replied, taking the margin out to nine before Avenel won the last four ends, scoring nine shots to draw the game at 25- all.
Mary Black, Ruth Underwood, Jason Toy and George Pedler (s) led for most of the game until Nagambie drew even on end 21 and held on to win by three shots, 21–18.
