The Numurkah Rd and Hawkins St intersection will be upgraded with traffic lights and turning lanes aimed at improving safety and access for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
Councillors voted at the April Greater Shepparton City Council meeting to buy a parcel of land on the north-east side of the intersection from IGA.
This will pave the way for the intersection to be upgraded.
Cr Fern Summer said Shepparton North deserved safe intersections, and that this intersection had been problematic for a long time.
Cr Summer said the upgrade would “provide safer traffic flows, U-turn movements from the sports precinct and pedestrian movements”.
The upgrade is part of the Shepparton North Activity Centre Structure Plan, which aims to transform the area into an activity centre and provide safer movement through the Shepparton Sports City area.
The upgraded intersection will include the addition of traffic lights, a short right-turn lane and a shared through/left lane from Hawkins St.
A left-turn deceleration lane into Hawkins St from the north will be added, and the road widened for northbound cycling traffic.
Service roads and site access will be consolidated.
Pedestrian crossings will be added on all sides except the north.
Motorists will be able to make safer U-turns, which will improve access around Shepparton Sports City.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said council recognised there were serious safety concerns at the site, and this upgrade would alleviate the pressure by providing safer turning and accessibility for motorists and pedestrians in the area.
“This land acquisition will enable council to proceed with the preferred design, supporting better traffic flow and safer movement for all road users,” Cr Sali said.
The parcel of land that will be purchased from IGA was valued at $200,000 and will be used to develop footpaths.
The total estimated cost of the upgrade is $6.38 million.
In March 2025, the Federal Government committed $5 million for the intersection to be upgraded through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
IGA has agreed to contribute 56 per cent of the remaining cost of the upgrade, estimated to be $772,800.
The remaining cost of $607,200 will be funded by council.
The parcel of land acquired from IGA will be used for a new footpath.
