The luckiest junior angler of this weekend will be awarded the inaugural Lindsay Jefferies Memorial Award for Champion Junior Angler.
Challenge co-ordinator Andrew Jefferies said the committee felt it was an appropriate way to pay tribute to Lindsay and his efforts in supporting the sport and river health in the district community.
“Lindsay was a founding member of the Deniliquin RSL Fishing Club, which organised the former Deniliquin Fishing Classic.
“He did a lot for our community as part of that group and as a member of that event committee.
“Our event was announced in the same year that Lindsay passed, which was 2022, and we wanted to do something to pay tribute to him.”
The Champion Junior Angler is the junior with the largest single native fish catch of the weekend.
For this prize, catches on both Saturday and in Sunday’s Dash for Cash are taken into account.
The junior section is open to anglers aged 14 and under.
While Andrew said the event is on track to be a sell-out, any juniors who still want to enter are invited to enquire at the registration desk at Challenge HQ during tonight’s family fun night.
Adult entries will also be taken on the night, from 5pm, if any places are still available.
As a capped event, only 500 anglers can participate in the challenge each year.
At the time of going to print yesterday, registrations were already at 470.
Andrew said some are coming long distances just to be involved in the Deniliquin event.
“We’ve had registrations from as far as Queensland, and even a New South Wales communities that are an eight-hour drive away,” he said.
“We’ve also got people coming from Bathurst, Murrumbateman, Eden, Horsham and Ballarat, and a fair contingent from the Torquay and Geelong areas.”
Entry is $155 for adults (anyone 15 or above as of February 1) and $110 for juniors.
The ticket price includes Friday’s dinner, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, Saturday night’s dinner and lunch on Sunday during presentations.
All entrants also have the chance to win the major entry prize of a boat and motor package from Deniliquin Yamaha valued at over $15,000 and the chance to win several minor entry prizes worth more than $5,000 combined, and entry to the Sunday morning Dash for Cash Fishing Challenge.
