Lining up at Kings Park for the first home game of the campaign, the Lions faced an almighty Euroa outfit, with the 2025 runners-up showing no mercy to hand the home side a 35-60 defeat, leaving the Lions with a 2-2 record in seventh place after four rounds.
From the first centre pass, Seymour was on the back foot as the Magpies burst out of the blocks with sharp passing and strong intent, firing home the first five goals of the contest amid a 17-4 opening run, leaving the home side shellshocked.
A 14-goal deficit at quarter-time saw the Lions trailing 8-22, and the scoreline was soon made to look even worse as the relentless Magpies put the foot down in the second term, slowly widening the margin to lead by 23 at the half.
Down 18-41, Seymour responded in the third term and levelled things up across the court as it regained standing in the contest, although it remained 24 goals down by three-quarter time.
The final quarter was again a more competitive showing from the Lions, who were able to match the Magpies, but albeit lost the quarter by a goal, going down overall by an eventual 25 goals.
It was a tale of two halves, with almost the entirety of the damage being done in the first two quarters, and if there is a silver lining to come from the defeat, the fact that the Lions were able to respond and produce a competitive second half despite the scoreboard leaning so heavily in their opponents’ favour is an encouraging sign.
Ruby Martin was named Seymour’s best in the loss, well supported by the efforts of Ally Black and coach Elle Nexhip, who will look to rally her troops ahead of round five, which will prove another tough task for the Lions when they take on Tatura.
On a huge day for the club, Seymour will also celebrate the Sarah’s Day fundraiser for Breast Cancer Network Australia in honour of Sarah Locke, with Kings Park set to feature plenty of pink for the occasion, which last year raised $11,000.
In other results, the B-grade Lions recorded a 43-43 draw with the Magpies in a thrilling top-of-the-table encounter, with Andrea Grant named Seymour’s best, while the reigning premier B-reserve side claimed a dominant 49-35 victory in a grand final rematch to remain unbeaten, with Taylah Mason leading the way.
The under-17 Lions enjoyed a narrow victory, prevailing 42-40, with Lilli Kelly earning best-on-court honours, while the under-15 side had a tough day out, enduring a 14-72 loss, with Violet Watson named the Lions’ best.
