That’s why Mitchell Shire Council is celebrating National Volunteer Week by supporting local volunteers.
Community groups can apply for a grant of up to $500. Funds can support technology, training and development, equipment including personal protective equipment, subscriptions, transport or other applicable costs usually incurred by volunteers or the group.
Seymour Senior Citizens’ Club secretary John Armstrong said volunteering was one of the most rewarding things he had done.
“I joined the club when my wife passed away to make some new friends and stay active in the community,” he said.
“It’s become a big part of my life and the importance of it to older people in Seymour and district is hard to understate.
“It’s a regular social outing for people like me and it avoids isolation that can be a problem for older people.”
Mr Armstrong said fundraising and seeking grants was important for the sustainability of all volunteer organisations.
“It costs money to run a community group. Even a small one like ours has plenty of bills to pay,” he said.
“Grants like this one from Mitchell Shire Council ensure we can remain viable and continue to be here for our members.
“I encourage everyone to seriously consider volunteering in their community.
“It’s very rewarding and a great way to get to know your town and the people in it.”
Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Bill Chisholm was pleased the council could support volunteer organisations in this way.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities and we’re very thankful to have so many in Mitchell Shire,” he said.
“This grant is a small way council can support our volunteers and ensure they can continue doing their important work.
“There’s a wide range of volunteering opportunities available in Mitchell and I encourage everyone to visit our website and check them out.”
Applications close at 9am on Wednesday, June 8.
