Ben, now 17, spent several months at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne with his family before recently returning home to Deniliquin last month.
In support of the teen, Deni High School chose to host a colour run as part of the annual cross country, an idea that proved both popular and meaningful.
The event raised $510, with additional online donations still coming in.
All funds will go directly toward ongoing medical expenses for Ben, who was in attendance for the colour run on Wednesday.
Students embraced the event with enthusiasm.
“It’s lots of fun and raises money for a great cause,” school vice captain Max Ferguson said.
“We thank the teachers for organising it. I loved it and would do it again,” fellow vice captain Aria Taylor.
Ben’s mother, Aileen Hayes, said the family has been overwhelmed by the school’s support.
“We just really appreciate what the school has done, we appreciate everything,” she said.
“This will help in the future, especially with getting him back to school.
“He does want to get back to school, and do Year 12.”
Vice principal Robyn Kiley said the school was keen to help in any way it could.
“We were really excited to run a great event,” she said.
“Ben is such a valued member of the school community. The school is just really excited to support him.”
