The Presidents and members of the Rotary Clubs of Henley Beach and West Beach are deeply saddened by the passing of our long-serving member, Norm Lewis, aged 109.
Until recently, he was considered the third oldest man in Australia.
Professionally, Norm was a distinguished forester, awarded the Queen’s Imperial Service Order for Services to South Australian Forestry and authored several books on plantation forestry. His expertise took him to the Limestone Coast, where he joined the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier.
From there his outstanding community service with the Rotary Club of Henley Beach, the founding of the Rotary Club of West Beach (formerly Kidman Park), and his encouragement of fellowship, resulted in two Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Awards. He cultivated many friends in the clubs, many of whom celebrated his recent Christmas Eve birthday at Southern Cross Care West Beach.
Norm volunteered for military service in World War II.
Inspired by working with Sir Douglas Mawson he travelled to Antarctica three times, the last while over 90.
Remarkably, at the age of 105, Norm was living independently at home.
We are grateful for his extraordinary life and wish to express our sincere condolences and appreciation to his family for his outstanding long service to the South Australian community.
