On Saturday, May 30, Shannon crossed the painted white line for Strathmerton’s senior side for the 250th time as the Bulldogs hosted Barooga in the Picola District League’s eighth round.
And as he has done countless times over the years, Shannon willed his side home to a thrilling victory, allowing the club legend to belt out the Bulldogs tune with gusto as Strathmerton held Barooga goalless in the second half to overturn a 15-point deficit.
Strathmerton rolled onto a sixth win in round nine on Saturday against Katunga, marking the end of a week of celebrations for the household Bulldog name, but his impact on his town’s team won’t come to a close yet.
The club sung their praises for Shannon in a statement on social media ahead of the milestone match against the Hawks, acknowledging the decades of dedication from the 2010, 2015 and 2019 flag hero.

“A true clubman in every sense of the word, Matty is a life member, three-time premiership player, coach, captain, and one of the club's biggest volunteers,” the statement read.
“His commitment, leadership, loyalty and countless hours behind the scenes have helped shape our club both on and off the field.
“Congratulations on 250 games Matty — an incredible achievement and one the whole club is proud to celebrate.
“Thanks for everything you continue to do for the Bulldogs.”
