Cobram continued its string of hot form, defeating Mulwala Seniors by 61 points at Scott Oval on Saturday despite a strong start by the Lions.
William Cookson continued on with his exhilarating form kicking five goals for the Lions while Sean Robinson chimed in for another three.
The Lions came out of the blocks kicking six goals to one in the first quarter, but the reigning premiers quickly clawed their way back into the game by half time.
With less than a goal separating the two sides, a tight tussle was expected in the second half, but it was the Tigers that kept the momentum to blow the game wide open as the game got underway in the third term.
Booting the first three goals after half time, and five goals to two overall in the third quarter, the home side took the lead for the first time all afternoon.
Heading into the last quarter the Lions were only 15 points down but could not match it with the Tigers who piled on nine more goals to the Lions two.
The defeat leaves the Lions sitting on three wins from five games and fifth on the Murray League ladder.
Mulwala will now take on fourth placed Nathalia at home this weekend in what will be a thrilling match at Lonsdale Reserve.

Mulwala Reserves endured one of those days where the scoreboard operator got more of a workout than the midfield.
Taking on Cobram, the Lions found themselves under siege early, and it did not let up.
By quarter time it was clear Mulwala would need a miracle, and by half time it was slipping further away.
To their credit, the boys kept turning up, even if the ball did not always follow. The backline saw relentless pressure, while the midfield battled hard against a fast and skilled opposition.
Up forward, opportunities were rare, but Nathan Thrower ensured Mulwala would not go goalless, kicking the team’s only major.
Best players Hugo Varndell, Zachary Wheeler, Isaac Pitches, Brock Johnson, Jake Mackinnon, and Angus Heslin all showed grit in what could be described as a character-building game.
Cobram ran away with the win, but the Lions will look ahead with optimism and a determination to improve next week.

Mulwala U17s faced a tough challenge against Cobram, going down 6.2 (38) to 13.6 (84) in a hard-fought contest.
Despite the scoreboard, there were plenty of positives to take out of the game, with the side showing effort and determination across all four quarters.
Cobram came out strong early, applying pressure and making the most of their opportunities in front of goal.
Mulwala worked their way into the game through the second term, with some strong passages of play and improved ball movement giving them scoring chances.
Up forward, Bryon Dodd worked tirelessly to present as a target, bringing the ball to ground and giving his teammates opportunities to stay involved in the contest.
Down back, Finn Wood stood tall at full back under constant pressure, competing strongly in one-on-one contests and taking some important defensive stops. He was well supported by Tyce Woodhead and Archer Kirchen on the back flanks, who both showed great determination—providing run, rebound, and consistent pressure to help slow Cobram’s attacks.
In the middle, Tom Taylor battled hard in the ruck, giving his midfielders first use and following up well at ground level to keep the contest alive.
Up the ground, Nate Leith worked hard on the forward flank, applying pressure and creating opportunities inside 50 with his effort and intent.
However, Cobram’s consistency and ability to capitalise kept them in control. To Mulwala’s credit, the group never dropped their heads.
The second half saw continued effort around the contest, with several players stepping up and competing well.
While the margin remained, the work rate and intent were clear signs the team is heading in the right direction.
Overall, while the result didn’t go Mulwala’s way, the effort and development within the group continue to build, setting a strong foundation for the weeks ahead.

It was always expected to be a tough contest, but the boys fought it out right to the end. Cobram came in fit and made the most of every opportunity, resulting in a comfortable win.
With new rotations and players taking on different positions, the boys adapted well and embraced the challenge.
Down back, the defence worked hard all day, with Tate Phillips giving his all.
Through the midfield, Dayne, Colin, and Nash battled strongly, working hard to win the ball and drive it forward.
Up front, the forwards applied pressure and led well to create opportunities, with Benji and Elijah attacking the contest with intensity.
Overall, every player put in a genuine effort, and the group came away with a clear understanding of what they can continue to work on.

Mulwala 30 def by Cobram 49
The A Grade Lions faced tough opposition in Cobram. The Tigers forced the Lions into scrappy play, unforced errors, and missed opportunities.
In the second half, the Lions dug deep, working themselves out of the slump and beginning to stamp their dominance. Multiple rotations were used throughout the day due to the heat, which did not impact the team negatively.
The defensive pressure in the last half was excellent, with numerous turnovers creating strong opportunities for the shooters to display their skill and combination work.
The Lions will now take the learnings from this match and prepare for their biggest contest of the year so far against Nathalia next week.

A slow start saw Mulwala chasing the game early and trailing at half time. The second half told a different story, with defensive pressure lifting across the court and creating plenty of turnover opportunities.
Teagan and Steph formed a strong defensive combination, working seamlessly to apply pressure and win the ball back. Unfortunately, the team was unable to capitalise on all opportunities, but it was a strong fightback to secure a well-deserved draw.

The Lions knew it would be a tightly contested game and started strongly, with scores even at half time. However, they were unable to maintain the momentum and went down by six goals.
Under 17 players Bonnie and Marlie were standouts. Bonnie gave 100 percent all game, working hard to shut down her opponent and feed the ball into the shooters. Marlie made the Cobram shooters work hard for every goal.
Addye was again consistent throughout, never giving up and working tirelessly to try and secure the win.

The Under 17 girls played a tough match, showing resilience and determination throughout.
The attackers worked cohesively, capitalising on every opportunity and converting under pressure. Through the midcourt, a rotating team-maintained energy and flow, linking defence and attack effectively.
Defensively, the girls were strong, applying constant pressure and refusing to give up, even in challenging moments. Although the game was hard fought, the team demonstrated growth, adaptability, and a positive attitude that will continue to build confidence for future matches and strengthen overall team spirit.

A tough game against a strong Cobram side saw the girls go down, but their attitude never wavered. They stayed positive, supported each other, and worked hard until the final whistle.
Defensively, the team worked tirelessly to disrupt Cobram’s attack and apply pressure on every pass. The focus now will be on turning that effort into cleaner connections and stronger finishes.
Attention now turns to a big clash with Nathalia, providing a great opportunity to respond and reset.

The girls took on a strong Cobram side in a tough but competitive contest. They came out with great intensity early, matching Cobram and trailing by just two goals at quarter time.
The second quarter proved challenging, with some passing errors allowing Cobram to capitalise and extend their lead to over ten goals by half time.
Despite this setback, the girls showed great determination and resilience, continuing to fight hard and bringing the margin back to ten goals by the final siren.
The defenders had a big job against Cobram’s strong holding shooters, with Poppy Kirchen standing out for her effort. Her ability to apply pressure and secure multiple intercepts earned her the $10 canteen voucher.
In attack, Indy Burnett battled through physical pressure from strong defenders and showed great composure, earning the Thursday night dinner voucher.
Charlotte Sims also impressed, rotating seamlessly through multiple positions, with her quick footwork and sharp decision-making earning her the Papalias voucher.
Overall, it was a tough game, but the girls could be proud of their efforts to never give up.
Under 11s
The Under 11 Blue Team faced a strong and tall defensive side but rose to the challenge with determination and effort.
Every player gave their all in their assigned positions, showing excellent teamwork and a positive attitude throughout the game.
Sophie Orr received the Divine Goodness Award for her outstanding contribution, while Marley Davies was recognised for her fantastic play with the Papalia’s Award.
