What can only be described as perfect conditions for golf was what greeted a big field of players at Nagambie Golf Club for Sunday's stableford event.
The course was set up beautifully and plenty of great scores were returned on the day.
The winning golfer was Mick O'Connell, who amassed a huge total of 44 stableford points to beat his nearest rival by three. O’Connell, a ground staff volunteer, used his intimate knowledge of the course for a well deserved win. Runner-up was Nathan Wilson, proving practice helps. Wilson was seen hitting balls during the week which obviously contributed to his 41 stableford points.
Two more players managed to reach 40 points on the day, with Ryan Ezard and Chris Roberts finishing third and fourth respectively.
The social club trophy was completed on Sunday with only three of the scheduled six rounds played due to lockdowns. The trophy is awarded to the most consistent golfer throughout winter with the shortened format assisting this year's winner Phil Neville, who accumulated 16 points for the win.
Nearest-the-pin prizes went to Aaron Winnell slapping one off the third tee that took a lucky bounce and then trickled up to the green to claim a ball, Jeremy Ezard barely reaching the eighth, visiting Kilmore golfer Neil Dando scuttling an ugly runner into the 13th with the ball running past the hole and narrowly missing out on an ace, and Dean Brown doing his thing on the 16th once again.
Next week's golf will be a stroke — monthly medal with G. Bow on office duty and H. Lawrence in the bar.

We can finally say that we have played a full week of golf again and with the course in fantastic condition it was very good timing.
On Wednesday, the women had the first round of the Belle Hamilton Trophy, which is an aggregate stableford event over two rounds. Pam Jarvis (25) had a great day out, winning with a terrific 44 points. The next best was Liz Gee who had 40 points and those were both good scores to start a two-round event.
The extra competition of the best nine out score was won by Jarvis with 25 points. The ball pool went to Jarvis, Gee, Paula Britton and Ann Smith with 34 points.
The men also played a stableford round and the top score went to Dave Hamilton (9) who had 40 points to win A-grade. The B-grade winner was Phil Jarvis (15) with 36 points and C-grade was won by Mick Papworth (21) with 37 points.
The nearest-the-pin on both the fourth and 17th was Dave Hamilton, the sixth went to Ian Richardson and the 12th was won by John Boruch. A score of 34 points was needed to be in the ball pool.
The mixed nine holes was won by Stubby Byrne (23) with a steady 18 points. The next best was Dilva Grattan with 15 points. Ronnie Gardner and Duncan Chisholm were also in the ball pool with 13 points.
On Saturday, the men played a stableford round and the A-grade winner was Dave Newson (13) with a great score of 40 points. The B-grade winner was Bill Stevens (21) with 34 points.
The nearest-the-pins went to Newson on the sixth, Peter Nelson on the 12th and Gary Neville on the 17th, while the fourth stayed with the club. The drive and pitch on the eighth and the 15th were both won by Peter Sawyer. The ball pool went to those with 34 points or better.
The women competed for the delayed September monthly medal, so it was a stroke round. The winner of the medal on a countback and also claiming B-grade was Sue McCall with 95-23=72. The A-grade winner was Di Byrne with 90-18=72. The nearest-the-pin on the 17th was Jane Fletcher. The ball pool went to -McCall, -Byrne, Dale Stuart and Paula Britton with 75 nett on a countback.
The Friday social holes this week is stableford over holes one to nine. On Saturday it is the first round of the men’s championships as well as the monthly medal for both the men and the women.
Finally, a reminder that the annual general meeting will be held this Saturday at 5pm.
Avenel
Saturday morning junior golf was back this week in ideal conditions.
Well done Alex Smith for creating and running the competitions most weeks. It is great to see the juniors out playing, improving and enjoying their golf.
Eleven youngsters tested their skills playing stroke and Lindsay Smith won the scratch with a score of one-over. Runner-up was Campbell Smith with two-over. Handicap winner was Will Lynch with four-under nett and Max Harding was runner-up, even with the card. Max also won the Bank Street Wood Fired Pizza voucher for his terrific shot on the 18th – it would have knocked the seniors off too!!
The second round of the men’s championships was also played in near perfect conditions and a huge thank you must go to Bill Harmieston (Pizza Bill), Dale Smith, Terry Lowis and Graeme Toy for their many hours on the mowers. Also, thanks to Lindsay Smith for doing the sands.
The daily competition sponsor was JCS Electrical Solutions, donating a $100 club voucher, and wouldn’t you know it, Jed duly went out and won his own prize with 75 nett. To his credit, he put it straight over the bar to quench the thirst of the gentlemen there.
There was a countback for runner-up with Matt Eddy and Dave Fullager tied on 76 nett. Eddy prevailed but Fullager didn’t go home empty-handed as he won nearest-the-pin on the 18th.
Adam Harrap collected a ball for drive and pitch on the seventh.
Tim Batten was the lucky winner of the fantastic Avenel Meats-sponsored meat tray.
Despite a “mishap” with one of his clubs, Scoota Donovan managed the low round of the day, with 82 off the stick — certainly not his best but still in the mix — to be tied with Jed Smith with two rounds to go.
This year the inaugural Bernie Stevens trophy will be awarded to the B-grade club champion and anyone who knew the great man would want to be the first to have their named etched on it.
Thus, the race for the prize is tight. Nick Hart leads by one stroke from Matt Eddy, with Adam Harrap a further three strokes behind, although all three of these players must play the last two rounds to qualify.
C-grade is also being hotly contested with Bill Eddy leading by one from Graeme Toy, and Howard Geldard is one shot further back. Again, though, Eddy and Geldard must play the last two rounds to qualify.
It should be an interesting finish to the championships in the next couple of weeks, so if you’re about, come down and check it out.
The third round will be played on November 13, followed by the fourth round on November 20, which is the gold medal round with Jed, Dale, Alex and Bill Eddy qualified.
AGK Accounting is sponsoring a $100 Avenel Golf Club voucher daily competition prize for the third round of the club championships. A reminder, you must be a financial member of the Avenel Golf Club to be eligible.
Sadly, the women have finished competition golf for the year, but anyone wishing to play will be most welcome to join in with the men.
Next week is a par event off the white tees (yellow tees for the ladies).
The annual general meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 10, at 7.30pm at the clubhouse. COVID-19 guidelines will be adhered to.
All executive and committee positions are open, so if you would like to give it a crack please put your nomination in as soon as possible.
Nomination forms are available from the clubhouse noticeboard on the front verandah or inside on the notice board.
Any matter for discussion (notice of motion) should be submitted in writing to the Secretary, Avenel Golf Club Inc., PO Box 6, Avenel, as soon as possible.
Please try to attend the meeting – it’s your club and needs the support of everyone!
In the meantime, good golfing to all.
