Hosting the Bombers at Kings Park on Saturday looking to make it three wins on the trot, the Lions were in a ruthless mood, piling on the pain at every opportunity to record both the biggest score and the biggest margin of victory seen this season in a 96-12 rout.
From almost the first centre pass it became clear that Seymour was going to win and such was the control the Lions had over the game, the question quickly became ‘by how much?’
A 14-0 run to start the contest was just the beginning, as while Kyabram managed to finally hit the scoreboard and make it 17-2, Seymour closed out the opening term with another nine-goal run, heading into the quarter-time break with the contest all but over, ahead 26-2.
The Lions’ command over the contest didn’t wane in the second term. In fact, it only got stronger as they kept the Bombers goalless for the entire quarter, adding 24 unanswered goals to their tally in what was a remarkable display.
It meant the scoreboard read an astonishing 50-2 at half-time, the Lions having hit the half-century with half an hour of netball still to play and having scored an incredible 33 unanswered goals across the end of the first term and entirety of the second.
The streak continued into the third quarter as the Lions made it 39 consecutive goals at 56-2, and while the Bombers eventually ended the run, they were unable to end the suffering, as Seymour continued to turn the screws.
By the final break the Lions led by 70 goals, ahead 76-6 and with the century in sight in the final term, however it wasn’t quite to be, with the fourth quarter yielding a 20-6 scoreline in favour of the home side, leaving Seymour four goals short of the ton on 96.
Ruby Martin and Ally Black combined for a mammoth 77 goals in the victory, which was led by best-on-court Lucy Zotti through the middle third, while Alyssah Chibnall contributed 19 goals to also be included in the best. The list was rounded out by Sarah Thorpe, who was imperious at wing defence.
It marks the third victory in a row for Seymour, which has now climbed up to fourth on the ladder, a game clear of Tatura, and will look to make it four straight when it takes on a struggling Shepparton at Kings Park this Saturday, with the reigning premier having lost its past four games in a mid-season slide.
The A-grade win also completed a dominant day across the grades for the Lions against Kyabram, with the B-grade side claiming a huge 100-21 victory, while B-reserve won 66-19.
In the under-17s, Seymour snatched a 34-26 triumph, while the under-15s side was valiant in a 15-43 defeat.
