Neither Jan Wesselman nor Wilma Atkins had won the title before and members were treated to an exciting contest that changed complexion a number of times.
Wesselman was the eventual winner 25-23. Congratulations to both women for providing a match truly worthy of a final.
Midweek pennant
Division one posted back-to-back wins with a two-rinks-to-one victory over visitor Rushworth. Ian Eichfuss’ rink was slow out of the blocks and was behind after 11 ends but was much too strong in the back end, winning by 19. Robert Brown’s rink started okay but dropped 10 shots over four ends in the middle and didn’t recover to go down by seven. Max Hammond’s team took the lead with a five on the 10th end and, despite hitting a bit of a flat spot, finished professionally for a strong 12-shot win.

Division two was a clash of the division heavyweights with Seymour hosting Shepparton Golf. Top spot was on offer to both unbeaten sides with Seymour prevailing by 24 shots, winning two of the three rinks. Brodo’s rink started well and was up by 10 until Golf reduced the lead to two with two to play. Seymour won the last two ends for a five-shot victory. Wesselman’s rink lost the first five ends to be down 10 blots. Despite steadying and surging late, it went down by five. In contrast, Dale Sellick’s rink pinged the lids, winning the first four ends and was always in control and victorious by 24.

Donna Syms’ rink led by 10 after 19 ends and still led by four with one to play. Dropping five on the last was the killer. Experience saved the day with Kleiny’s rink always in control and a massive 27-shot win meant Seymour came away with the bulk of the points on the day.

A five on the last sealed a six-shot victory for the visitors. Wendy Hutton’s rink led by three after 19 ends but went scoreless thereafter, also going down by six. Seymour was disappointed to come away empty-handed in two games that were closer than the scores indicated.

Division three hosted Avenel on the synthetic and recorded an all rinks win to maintain top spot on the ladder. Ian Eichfuss’ rink outscored its opponent 40-4 after the sixth end to record a big win. Robert Brown’s rink was down by three with two to play and recorded twos on each of the last two ends to squeak home by the narrowest of margins. Max Hammond’s team finished strongly over the last five ends to win by 13. Graeme Flint’s rink was ahead by just one after 17 ends but a five on the next gave it breathing space to eventually win by eight.

Division four made the trek to Kyabram and, despite sharing the rinks, lost by 10 overall. Eon Densworth’s rink took the lead on the 12th end and maintained it for a six-shot win. After a deflating journey, Jan Wesselman’s team finished strongly with singles on the final two ends for a two-shot victory. Despite being down by 13 after 19 ends, Brodo’s rink fought back bravely, but left its run a little too late to go down by one. Wendy Hutton’s rink won the first end, but it was lean pickings thereafter, eventually falling by 16.

Division six hosted Yea on our beautiful grass surface and went down by 11. Greg Quillinan’s rink was down by nine on the card after 15 ends but finished strongly to appear to have snatched a draw, before a card recount showed it had fallen short by one. Margaret Flynn’s rink started well and never lost the lead, eventually winning by four. Don Lawton’s rink had only recorded a single shot after seven ends and was never really in the hunt, going down by 16.

Avenel
Midweek pennant
Another road trip for division two in round four of GMBR pennant saw Avenel return home from Shepparton Park with one solitary point as a result of a drawn game and two losses, Avenel 1-57 to Shepparton Park 15-76.
Rusty Schwab, Charlie Kemp, Grace Kenworthy, David Furletti (s) went into the lunch break five shots up, but Shepparton Park won four ends in a row to take the lead after the break.
Avenel re-discovered its earlier form to draw even on the 19th end before its opponents scored a four on the 20th end to take the lead again.
With two ends to play, Avenel was three shots down, however the team rallied under pressure to win the last two ends with a two and one respectively to draw the game 21 apiece.
Ruth Underwood, Pam Pedder, Rob Kemp, Noel Slater (s) tried as hard as they did, but could not wrestle the lead from Shepparton Park at any time during their game.
A four on the second last end helped soften the eventual losing margin to nine shots, with the final score 19-28 in favour of Shepparton Park.
Ruth King, Kate Donovan, Jenny Furletti, Geoff Hateley (s) won 10 of the 14 ends before lunch, including eight ends in a row to be five up at the break.
In the second half they won only two ends as Shepparton Park changed its strategy and steamed past Avenel to claim the win 27-17.
The next game for division two is a home game against Tatura-Hill Top. This game will be played at Nagambie due to Avenel’s green being closed for maintenance. Thank you to our neighbour Nagambie for allowing us to play our home games on its green this month and for the use of all its facilities.
Division five came so very close to its first win of the season, going down to Euroa 2-38 to 12-40. Nyoli Bell, Glen Bell, Joyce White, George Pedler (s) kick started their game with a four and won 15 ends all up, including six of the last seven ends to come home strongly with an impressive 27-15 rink win.
Marion Gittus, Bill O’Connor, Graham Lewis, Graeme Toy (s) were behind from the get-go, not having to get the pencil out till the seventh end. Winning only three ends in the first half, they won five ends to six in the second half but won all their ends by one shot only. Euroa was too good, winning 25-11.
The next game for division five is away against Violet Town.
Weekend pennant
In round five, division six south travelled to Eildon to play Eildon 2, who prevailed with a solid win, 16-90 to 0-39.
Mitch Thomas, Graham Lewis, Joyce White, George Pedler (s) played with confidence and determination and were one shot up after end 16.
They then lost six ends in a row before winning the next three. But the surge by Eildon was enough to win the game 26-16.
James Wall, Marion Gittus, Fay Hateley, Jason Toy (s) lost to Eildon, 14-31. Winning just eight ends for the game, it was hard going for the two first-year players, but plaudits to the team for never giving up.
Kyle Pedder, Chris Fooht (sub) Ruth Underwood, Glen Bell (s) were also toughing it out, being 11 down at the break. With Eildon on fire in the second half, the score blew out to a 9-33 loss for Avenel.
Next Saturday, Avenel’s division six south once again travels to Eildon to play Eildon 1.
In the round five division three match, Seymour was far too good for Avenel on its home green, winning comprehensively 18-117 to 0-65.
Rusty Schwab, Jake Wall, Howard Geldard, Josh McDonald (s) were in chase mode for most of the game. After winning four ends in a row, they took a three-point lead into the 24th end.
However, Seymour scored the next four shots to claim the win by one shot, 21-20.
The closest Pam Pedder, Kate Donovan, Rob Kemp, Geoff Hateley (s) got to their opponents was one shot down on the 17th end.
Seymour won the remaining ends 9-4 for the rink win, 26-18.
Ruth King, Graeme Toy, Grace Kenworthy, David Furletti (s) saw a glimmer of hope on end 20, being only four down. Seymour then stamped its authority on the game, winning the last five ends and the game 16-29.
Donna Rowley, Charlie Kemp, Jenny Furletti, Noel Slater (s) started their game confidently and led for seven ends. Then Seymour hit its straps to score two sixes in three ends and take control of the game. After the break, Seymour continued its consistent play to win the game 41-11.
The next game for division three is against Shepparton Golf at Nagambie.
A big thank you to all the members who turned up for the working bee last Sunday. Armed with wheelbarrows and rakes, an army of young and old members worked tirelessly to spread more than eight cubic metres of sand in preparation for the laser machine to level the surface of the green with exacting precision.
Thanks to greenkeeper Spud for all his efforts in co-ordinatating the laser, the sand and the workers. Thanks also to Jenny, Pam and Donna for providing the morning tea for the workers.
Don’t forget the Christmas party after pennant on Saturday, December 18. Members are asked to provide a salad or sweet please. Add your name to the list on the noticeboard if you wish to attend.
Raffle tickets have been distributed and need to be returned before the Christmas party, when the winning ticket will be drawn. The prize is a Christmas hamper generously donated by O’Keefe’s IGA Seymour.
Happy birthday to Brett and Bill D. who will blow out the candles this week.
