The Ducks got off to a bright start and with the scores sitting at 2-2 they were on track to have a red-hot crack at their first win for 2021.
But the Renegades had grand plans of their own and despite half the remaining matches going to a deciding third leg, the ‘Gades proved too strong on the night, powering away to a strong 9-2 victory.
The highlights for the Ducks included a 132 to Davis Stokes while Yolanda DeNavi nailed a high peg of 57.
The Renegades’ Jarrod Kerr nailed a match high peg of 74 to go with two tons, Leigh Turnbull slammed in a ton, a 120 and a 135, Chrystal Turnbull scored a ton and a 105, Roscoe Penny snagged two tons and a bullseye peg of 50 and Roger McCallum hammered in a 140.
The next cab off the rank saw the Pyalong Tigers square off against the R.C.C. Kings.
With the Tigers sitting just outside the top four, a win against the higher ranking Kings would see them crack into the top echelon and set up the remainder of their season nicely with a good run home.
But the Kings have aspirations of their own. Exploding out of the blocks, the Kings took a 5-0 lead, before the Tigers landed a blow and the visitors ran away with an 8-3 win.
The Tigers had a quiet night of highlights with Jack Stephens throwing two tons, Justin Brady snagging a 138 and Dan Sporle scoring a 123.
The opposite was true for the Kings, with Adam Lynch nailing six pegs for the night – including high pegs of 78 and 90. He also pounded in two tons and two 140’s.
Terran Crispin slipped in four tons, a 121, 139 and a 140, Ben MacPherson threw a ton, a 101, 120 and two 140’s and Anthony Bohlman chipped in with a single ton.
The Royal Hotel’s local derby was the third fixture for round nine, with the Lions toeing the line against the Royal Rascals.
The Lions went into this match without their captain, but it mattered little to the final score, with the Lions banking the four points with a 9-2 victory.
It wasn’t all one-way traffic though, with the Rascals’ Stuart Crockett discovering a rich vein of form, closing the night out with four tons, a 105, 120, 114 and a 140 to go with the round high peg of 114. Well done, Stuey.
Noel Whitling wasn’t far behind his teammate either. He hammered in four tons, a 121 and two 140’s.
The Lions’ highlights included six tons and a 140 to Gary Power, Rob Welsh smashed in three tons and a 120, boom recruit Shane Hunt scored a ton and nailed five pegs which included high finishes of 50, 68 and 76.
Ladder-leading Badass hosted the next game of the evening at the Factory in Broadford.
They threw down the challenge to the Pirates who looked to consolidate their position on the ladder after cracking into the top four last week.
Badass got off to a flying start and burst out to a 4-1 lead. The Pirates fought back in the singles, but it was always going to be an uphill battle, with Badass pocketing the points with an eventual 6-5 victory.
Anthony Wallis continues to impress in his debut season, smashing in three tons, and three 123’s.
Dave Kennett nailed the highest finish of the match, a peg of 92. He also scored a ton, 120, 121 and 134. Peter Myles pounded in four tons and Wayne Cartner scored himself a 133.
Seth Kilroy stole the show for the Pirates, smashing the treble 20 at will, finishing the night with five tons, thee 140’s and a 180. Well done, Killa.
Steve Kilroy was also among the high scores, closing his account with seven straight tons.
Jamie Dow-Rowan nailed a 134 and captain Dan Kilroy chipped in with a solitary ton.
The fifth match-up of the round was between the R.C.C. Snipers and the Pyalong Buccaneers at the Royals Cricket Club.
It was a match-up that turned into a one-sided affair, with Snipers’ captain Mark ‘Robbo’ Robinson putting on a high scoring exhibition to lead his team to a percentage boosting 10-1 win.
Robbo finished the night with a staggering nine tons, a 119, 121, two 125’s, a 134 and two 140’s to go with a team high peg of 89.
Steve Ritchie nailed four tons and two 140’s, Jason Masters scored three tons and Dave Cooper snagged a 180 as well as a 120 and a 140.
The Buccaneers had a quiet night on the highlights front. Mark Ruddick snuck in a ton and a 110, Micky Doyle hit a ton and Carissa Trull hit the match high peg of 85.
The Top Guns locked horns with the Golf Club Aces in the next match of the night at the Commercial Hotel in Broadford.
After the Top Guns suffered the narrowest of losses in the previous two rounds, they were desperate to turn their fortunes around against the Aces.
That was looking likely with the Guns getting off to a 2-1 lead.
But the cream always rises to the top, as the Aces won six of the next eight games to win 7-4 which sees the golf club team return to the top four.
The Top Guns’ sharp-shooter Alan Sharp was in the zone, scoring two tons, a 124 and two 140’s as well as a team high peg of 63.
Young gun Zane Kilroy hit a high finish of 57 to go with a ton, a 109, 121, 125 and a 135.
Mark Jones dominated the highlight reel for the Aces. He hit a match high peg of 68 as well as throwing four tons, a 120, 125 and a 140.
Frank Roberts hammered in a ton, a 101, 121 and 124, captain Steve Raynor snagged two tons and a 121 as well as a high peg of 63 and Dave Ring chipped in with a 123.
The final game of the round took place at The Prince in Seymour, with the POW Rebels hoping to get the job done against the Kilmore Cobras.
The Rebels drew first blood in the quads game, but the Cobras struck back as quickly as would their namesake, winning the next six games on the spin and running away with a 9-2 victory.
Despite the final tally, the game was a lot closer than the lopsided final score line would suggest, with six of the eight singles matches going to a third leg tie-breaker.
The Rebels’ Jose Mason hit the team’s highest score, finishing with a 134 next to her name.
Marg Francis notched up another singles victory with a high peg of 58 as well as a high score of 111 and Rebels’ captain Shelley Jensen nailed the team’s highest finish, a peg of 64.
The Cobras’ highlights included two tons and a match high peg of 68 for Robert Parkinson.
Brett Fowkes snuck in a 130, Nick Monaghan hit a 125 and a high peg of 57 and Cobras’ captain Kevin Tootell nailed a ton to go with five finishes for the night.
