Coming up against Benalla at Kings Park on Saturday, it was another totally dominant performance from Elle Nexhip’s Lions, who continued their strong run of form to notch a 74-18 victory over the Saints.
The gulf in class between the two sides was clear from the opening centre pass as the Lions piled on the first five goals of the contest and didn’t bother to look back from there.
The margin was nearly at double digits by quarter-time as Seymour powered to a 17-8 lead entering the first huddle, and in a supreme show of power, broke the contest even further open before the half-time interval.
With a 19-2 second term, the ruthless Lions pushed the advantage out to a huge 26 goals at the main break, leading 36-10, having twice in the second term gone on 7-0 runs to establish a seemingly insurmountable lead with half the contest still to play out.
With the first eight goals of the second half unanswered, and 18 of the first 19 total, it quickly became apparent that Seymour was set to receive a big percentage boost from the contest, the only question that remained was how big it would be.
A 55-13 lead at the final change continued to snowball in the final term as Seymour kept the foot down, scoring 19 goals for the third straight quarter to eventually claim the mammoth 56-goal victory.
Nexhip was named Seymour’s best in the win, continuing her supreme run of form, which should come as no surprise for the former England international, while Sarah Thorpe also continued her purple patch through the midcourt. Ruby Martin rounded out the most influential, having poured in 58 goals at goal shooter.
The team sheet also revealed a welcome inclusion for the Lions at the weekend, with former Wellman medallist Sarah Szczykulski listed as having played two quarters on Saturday, her first appearance for Seymour in 2026 after moving away at the start of the year.
The Lions head into the weekend’s bye with a firm grip on fourth spot, having won their past five matches to secure a 9-4 record through 13 rounds, sitting two wins clear of fifth-placed Shepparton with five rounds remaining before finals.
Seymour will return to action on July 18 at Kings Park when the Lions host Mansfield in an attempt to make it six straight wins.
