About 250 go-karters took to the course on Quarry Road, Rochester, for a late start on Saturday after the fog lifted, completing qualifying in their respective classes, with six out of 11 divisions also getting through their heats.
Unfortunately, the misty conditions lingered through Sunday and racing was forced to be abandoned, with trophies awarded where possible in some classes, while others went without a final result.
“It's a fantastic event. There was over 250 karters and the majority were from outside the region,” club secretary Glenn Cornell said.
“All those people had to stay somewhere. All those people had dinner, so it brought a lot of good benefits to the region.”
The Golden Power Series is a seven-meet series held around regional Victoria.
Round five is scheduled for August 29 and 30 at Goulburn Valley Kart Club in Numurkah.
The series attracts some of the best young karters from around the state.
“It’s very competitive and just about every Supercar driver or Formula One driver you could name started in go-karts. It's grassroots motorsport,” Cornell said.
Aside from the meet, the club’s major official event for the year, Rochester Kart Club holds regular social days and is looking to branch into more club days.
Cornell said the club was looking to partner with nearby Numurkah to hold more events and was working on making the club more ready for regulated competition.
“It’s a highly regulated sport and risk assessments are very important, so you require a lot of officials and volunteers to actually run race events,” he said.
“Officials for a state event like this come from Karting Victoria, but probably in order for us to have regular race events, we need to get some officials, so that’s our next step now.”
