The Avenel jet booted two goals for the Swans as they held on to chalk up a 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) victory over Longwood at Redlegs Stadium on the day of the club’s 135-year celebrations.
Avola, one of the premier on-ballers in Kyabram District League, proved to be a headache for the Redlegs in his best-afield performance, while captain Kyle Maynard provided strong support.
A seven-goal-to-two third quarter from the visitors gave them much-needed breathing space as they held off a fast-finishing Longwood.
Playing coach Jordan Formosa was one of the home side’s top performers, while his brother Jye was electric up forward with five goals.
The round four win was just what Avenel coach Matthew Huy was searching for following his outfit’s disappointing loss a fortnight ago.
“It was a good four-quarter performance from the boys,” he said.
“Longwood came to play and it’s a credit to the boys for how they were able to respond. Even though we weren’t in front for the whole game I thought they gave a real four-quarter effort ... we still have some things to work on but if we continue on this path it will hold us in good stead.
“(On Avola) Well what can you say? He’s just an excellent talent. He’s one of those players that when you call on people to stand up, he stands up. The same can be said for captain Kyle Maynard.”
Elsewhere, Nagambie and Shepparton East remain the two unbeaten sides in the competition after the opening four rounds.
The Lakers skipped away to a 29-point win over Dookie United on the road, while the Eagles thumped Undera by 108 points.
For the Lakers, a five-goal second term gave them ascendency over United on the hill of Mt Major.
Nathan Fothergill, in game 150, was at his classy best for the Lakers and booted three goals in the 18.15 (123) to 15.4 (94) win.
The four-time premiership gun had plenty of support from his brother Blake (two), Reilly Old and David Comi (three).
United’s Kyle Tapscott was superb for the hosts and ended with five majors to his name.
