The Dolphins star has done a superb job in the tournament, but Crossland's availability after serving a four-game suspension has led to his inclusion on an extended bench for Saturday's World Cup semi-final against Tonga at McDonald Jones Stadium.
Crossland won the Danny Buderus Medal as Newcastle's player of the year after his tough as teak displays all season, culminating in his stunning grit and guts effort in the preliminary final win over Penrith.
He missed the grand final, but is now back in the frame for a stunning second wind.
Marshall-King started last year's Pacific Championships, won by the Kiwis, but was injured in the opening match and did not play in the final.
Crossland was subsequently elevated to hooker in his absence, so it was no surprise Marshall-King was asked what the Knights No.9's return had done for his competitive juices.
"I think for myself it's just being the best I can. The hooker role is up for grabs and we challenge each other in training," Marshall-King said.
"Phoenix has played really well this year for Newcastle. He's a competitor as a person and as a player."
Kiwis coach Stacey Jones said he was yet to make a call on what role Crossland would play.
"Phoenix has been part of our team the last two (Pacific Championships) Â campaigns and we know the type of player he is," Jones said.
"Where he was two years ago to where he is now, he is much better player. He is very confident in himself and the season he had for Newcastle was special. It was unfortunate he missed out on the grand final.
"We have got Te Maire Martin too. It is no given that Phoenix will play. Now with the six-man bench, you get more flexibility."
Marshall-King's guile and craft at dummy-half has been enhanced by the impact big middles such as James Fisher-Harris, Moses Leota, Joseph Tapine and Naufahu Whyte have made in the tournament.
"It's been really good playing with the forwards I have next to me. They make me feel safe," Marshall-King said.
"Last year I played one game for the Kiwis and got injured, and I am taking every week as it comes and I am truly grateful.
"We know it is going to be tough against a big crew of Tongans, but we have a big pack as well. It is going to be a grinding game."
