Alongside co-host Rihannon Dihm, Ms Deverell is set to soon put on Seymour’s third Mother’s Day Classic — painting Lions Park pink to raise funds for breast and ovarian cancer research.
Ms Deverell said choosing to host the event in Seymour was an easy decision.
“Seymour has the greatest asset in Mitchell Shire — the Goulburn River. It was a no-brainer,” she said.
Set on Seymour’s most picturesque path, the event is not only about raising money for vital cancer research, but it’s about reflection — honouring those who have faced these illnesses, and those who may have lost the battle.
Participants can choose to walk, jog or run either a 5km or 10km circuit.
Ms Deverell said the event was open to all, as long as you put on some pink.
“Anyone can get involved — the great thing about this track is that it’s also reasonably flat, so it’s good for prams and wheelchairs,” she said.
“We even invite well-behaved dogs on a leash.”
Over time, the event has seen steady growth and much success, with its first year involving over 100 participants.
“(We had) success from the first year with 130 participants, to over 320 participants last year,” Ms Deverell said.
“Rihannon and I are learning as we go, but we feel like it is growing every year.”
While an important factor of the classic is bringing people together on Mother’s Day, the team also has a fundraising goal of $20,000 for breast and ovarian cancer research.
Funds are raised through individual and group participants, with team Pucka Pookies leading the charge with nearly $5000 raised.
Aside from participants, the event is also supported by local businesses, including North Central Hire, Bunnings Seymour, Miss Wildflower, Nestlé Broadford, Alberto’s Delicacies, Mervalicious, Broadford CFA and the Mitchell Shire Concert Band.
“Everyone should head down for a great morning, the vibes are high and smiles are big,” Ms Deverell said.
“It’s a great start to Mother’s Day with friends and family.
“We also have a tribute wall for anyone wanting to post a note for a loved one.”
The Mother’s Day Classic will be held on Sunday, May 10, with registrations opening at 8am.
