The group has met with Moira Shire administrators to ask what they could do to persuade Vic Roads to move the crossings.
Spokesperson, Carol Henderson said there was no community consultation before the pedestrian crossings were installed in 2022.
“It has resulted in absolute traffic chaos on busy weekends in summer, Christmas and especially at Easter,” Carol said.
“Not to mention that many of us have nearly been hit on the pedestrian crossings by drivers who are busy watching the traffic and don’t see a pedestrian.”
Despite their representations to Vic Roads to have the pedestrian crossings moved further away from the roundabouts, Carol said nothing had happened.
“The traffic can’t move because there are so many people,” she said.
“The drivers are trying to look at the traffic while people are crossing, often in their blind spot.
“People just step out and walk and expect drivers to stop.
“I’ve nearly been hit so many times.
“You not only have to watch the cars on roundabout, but the cars parked on Belmore St on the left or in the centre.
“And the speed bumps on the exits of the roundabouts are overkill and a trip hazard for the elderly.”
Belmore Street falls under the management of the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) and Moira Shire Council chair administrator, Dr Graeme Emonson said they would continue to work with the department to ensure the current configuration meets the safety requirements expected of a major road.
“We understand the importance of balancing traffic flow with pedestrian safety, and will continue to engage with DTP to ensure our community's needs are being met,” Dr Emonson said.
YCAG has sent a petition to Vic Roads and will continue to lobby for the pedestrian crossings and the speed humps on the exits of roundabouts to be moved.
