The students have been working on their VCE unit 3 and 4 art making and archiving folios throughout 2025.
The course involves education on creating, refining and exhibiting artwork.
Being the first Year 12 cohort at St Mary’s, art teacher Sara Warner approached the Seymour and District Art Society to undertake a whole school exhibition, with which the students could be involved.
After securing a bright, open space at The Old Courthouse Gallery, St Mary’s College students were able have their work displayed.
The artworks culminated from almost a year of teaching across every art class from Foundation to Year 12.
The exhibition’s opening night was a definite success, with the pieces highlighting the students’ creativity and imagination.

“This was part of our unit, we’re doing art making and exhibiting, so we had to study how to curate an exhibition and organise it, as well as conservation considerations,” Year 12 student Liesl Rayner said.
“Our art teacher, Ms Warner, got in touch with the shire and helped organise for this to happen.”
While Ms Warner was unable to make it to the opening night on Friday, September 5, the students and staff present said she was instrumental in creating the exhibition by collecting and storing the students’ excellent artwork from early 2025.
The school funded framing of all the artworks to create a cohesive presentation and planned the exhibition’s organisation, contributing to the display.
“It’s been exciting, it’s been a busy week, but it’s been good,” staff member Jodie Neilson said.
“It’s all come together and we’re really happy with how it turned out.
“Sara’s been on the phone a fair bit, and we’ve been sending through photos just to get her input. We had a great day here, yesterday, putting everything up.”

Supported by members of the Seymour and District Art Society, Ms Neilson and the students were able to create a cohesive and visually appealing exhibition.
Year 12 student Eliza Schneider said there was a lot of detail that went into exhibiting the works.
“We have learnt that in exhibiting it’s how the artworks interact with each other on the walls, and how we place them with the colours and the sizing, and the themes,” she said.
“It’s good that we get to put our school and ourselves into the community more.”
Fellow Year 12 student Crystal Cox said it was surreal seeing her own artwork on display, and being a part of the exhibition’s organisation.
“It feels so weird being in my own exhibition,” she said.
“Seeing my artwork up there, I feel like a professional.”
The exhibition will be on display for two weeks, and any interested buyers are welcomed to purchase the talented students’ pieces by contacting Ms Neilson, whose number can be found at the gallery.
