The webinar, titled Navigating the Shift, was hosted by council and facilitated by digital safety advocate Sarah Barnbrook, founder of the charity Away From Keyboard.
The workshop aimed to support families through digital changes proactively, rather than waiting for problems to emerge.
Recent legislative changes require certain social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent Australians under-16 from creating or continuing social media accounts.
However, the session emphasised that regulation alone could not address all risks young people face online.
Rather than focusing on specific apps, the workshop encouraged families to monitor behavioural patterns and wellbeing changes that might indicate a young person needs support.
“These experiences don't always begin dramatically,” Ms Barnbrook said.
“They often show up gradually through small shifts in behaviour, spending more time online, pulling back from usual interests, or changes in mood and energy.”
The session explored how constant comparison, algorithm-driven pressure, exposure to distressing content, image misuse, social exclusion and misinformation can affect young people's mental health and identity during adolescence.
Ms Barnbrook said that online harm often developed gradually across various platforms including social media, gaming, private messaging and group chats.
The workshop promoted relationship-based strategies rather than fear or blanket restrictions.
These included prioritising open conversations, co-designing boundaries with young people, strengthening offline community connections, and helping youth recognise when online experiences become negative.
Council paired the session with information about local youth-friendly spaces, summer activities and support pathways.
“When councils invest early in education, connection and prevention, it sends a clear message to young people that they are supported and valued,” Ms Barnbrook said.
