Getting a word out of Pine Lodge breeder Jack Nelson is difficult, letting his cattle do the talking on behalf of his expertise.
Mr Nelson manages Jackungah Stud where he breeds Speckle Park cattle, and with his team of three handlers and 19 head he had great success at the Melbourne Royal Show.
His modesty in front of the camera and in conversation abounds, so he sums up a long day at the ring in one word.
“Good,” he said, letting his smile reveal his satisfaction.
Jackungah won 14 ribbons in the Speckle Park breed category on Thursday, September 28, with first places in the categories of heifer between 12 and 16 months, cow over 36 months and senior cow which then finished as Grand Champion Female.
The stud also placed well with three bulls in the 15 to 18 month class.
Monique Miller works with Jackungah Stud and shared the leading with Mr Nelson and Lachie Malcolm, exhibiting the Reserve Junior Champion Heifer.
“I have been doing this for a while now,” she said.
“We tend to pick out the ones from the stud who we think will go alright, because it’s good promotion and good advertising for us.
“And it’s what I do — it’s just life.”
Mr Nelson said the day’s results had met his team’s expectations, giving praise to his handlers with his typical brevity.
“Everyone’s good — they’re good.
“I am very happy with the gang.
“Happy days!”
