Hughes Creek Catchment Collaborative project co-ordinator Vanessa Malandrin said the tree planting on Saturday, July 30, wass part of the Whiteheads Creek Bioblitz Project and co-ordinated by the collaborative and the informal Seymour Urban Landcare group.
“This project aims to engage and educate Seymour residents, and landholders with creek frontage access, about the ecological values of the creek,” she said.
“The project encourages the local community to engage through citizen science opportunities, like those offered by the iNaturalist smartphone app.”
The tree planting event will encourage participants to discover the wildlife which inhabits the urban reaches of Whiteheads Creek, from Delatite Rd to the Goulburn Valley Highway (Emily St) in Seymour.
Two interesting presentations have already been given as part of the Whiteheads Creek Bioblitz Project.
The first was a talk by Geoff Williams, who has has been studying platypus since 1994 and helped found the Australian Platypus Conservancy.
The second was by Alison Pouliot, an acclaimed photographer and mycologist, who fascinated guests with an entertaining talk about fungi, including locally-foraged mushrooms and a guided tour to Seymour bushland reserve.
More events are planned for September as part of the bioblitz.
People wishing to attend should meet at 10am along Whiteheads Creek in front of Abdallah Rd.
A light lunch will be provided from noon for the volunteers, who are urged to wear appropriate clothing and bring their own gloves.
Those wishing to participate in the event should RSVP to seymoururbanlandcare@gmail.com
