State Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland has criticised the government’s handling of Victoria Police, citing increasing crime rates and diminishing police presence.
Speaking in parliament, she highlighted significant crime surges in regional areas, including youth crime, family violence and farm crime.
Ms Cleeland said there were 319 fewer officers than last year statewide and 800 vacancies, and that many police stations faced reduced hours or closure.
A Victorian Government spokesperson, however, pointed to its investment in policing.
“We have invested more in our police than any other state or territory — with a record investment of more than $4.5 billion delivering more than 3600 new sworn police officers as well as world-class intelligence systems, new technology and new and upgraded police stations,” the spokesperson said.
“Decisions around the allocation and deployment of police officers are a matter for the Chief Commissioner of Police.
“Victoria Police officers play a critical role in protecting the community and saving lives, and we thank them for their vital service to the state.”
