Proceeds from the last 12 months were last week donated to support Deniliquin High School’s Driver Education program.
The generous $2000 contribution will boost the course being delivered to the Year 10 students at the end of the year.
Developed over the last 20 years by the high school’s P&C and other community members, the program is a week long course which aims to reduce road trauma through proactive education.
The program’s committee engage local and visiting speakers to take students through practical and theoretical workshops which promote road safety and personal safety.
Popular workshops include the week-opening mock crash involving emergency services, and the opportunity to get behind the wheel on the Deniliquin Sporting Car Club track.
Program committee member Jenny Fellows gratefully accepted the social club’s support when she attended last Friday night’s raffle, which she attended with her family.
“That $2000 will go into the program for this year, and will directly benefit students and our aim to educate young people about making the right choices,’ Mrs Fellows said.
“We’ve always received fantastic community support for the program, and funding like this will either allow us to provide further subsidised training through Deni Driver Training for participants or help cover the costs of guest speakers.
“This year’s program will run from December 7 to 11, and students pay a $50 fee to be involved.
“Money is also raised to support the program through our committee’s involvement in the Deni ute Muster - at the information tent and in providing an onsite breathalyzer.
“We have a lot of volunteers and a lot of our supporters offer services at reduced costs.
“Through donations and fundraising, in previous years, we’ve offered students two free driving lessons with Brain Purtill - one of which involved parents so they can learn how to support their learner driver - as well as the other programs during the week.”
White lion Social Club member Brenda Sutton said when the social club was approached to consider a donation to the driving program, it was an ‘easy sell’.
“It is such a great program to educate our children in driving safety,” she said.
“Thank you for the support that is given to our social club with the purchase of tickets in our weekly Friday night raffle.
“Without you all, donations would not be possible.”
