Kicking off tonight with a family fun night and charity auction to support Deniliquin’s Navorina Aged Care, the three-day event will see up to 500 anglers take to the Edward River for the chance to snag the best catch of the event.
But you don’t have to be an angler to land a great prize this weekend.
With a number of raffles, games and the charity auction, there are many ways to support the organising committee’s aim to support the local community and improve the health of local waterways.
Challenge HQ at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park showgrounds will come alive from 5pm tonight.
Last minute in-person registrations will be taken, and there will be on site catering and bar and refreshments to be enjoyed.
There will be children’s games and activities, and the raffle and auction which contribute to a total weekend prize pool of $60,000 will be on offer.
Challenge coordinator Andrew Jefferies said the huge number of prizes is thanks to a generous district community, and in particular major sponsors like Deniliquin Yamaha and Harvey Norman Deniliquin.
The auction will immediately follow the mega raffle. Tickets can only be purchased on the night, and you must be in attendance to claim your prize.
“There’ll be plenty of shade and cold drinks, and we invite you to bring your money and support the raffle and auction,” Andrew said.
“Remember, every dollar you spend buys one more fish to restock local waterways.”
Anglers will take to the water on Saturday for a full day of fishing, but then it’s back to HQ on Saturday night for another community event.
There will be catering from Deniliquin Lions, in addition to hot dogs and ice creams, and there will be yabby races and live music from Deni talents Shane McGrath and Sophie Butcher.
The Dash for Cash fishing event takes place on Sunday morning, wrapping up about 10.30am.
Weekend presentations are expected to start about 11am at Challenge HQ.
Among the prizes on offer on Sunday are the major raffle prizes - an AnglaPro 354 boat with Yamaha 15hp electric start motor, trailer and safety pack valued at $13,850 for first prize, and a Yamaha YFZ50 49cc kids' automatic quad bike valued at $3950.
Tickets are $5 and can be purchased throughout the weekend.
One entrant will also win an AnglaPro STL394 aluminium boat with a Yamaha 25hp motor and Precision boat trailer to be drawn by lucky entry.
The weekend’s fishing prizes will also be presented, including the adult and junior champion angler prizes.
