PS Canberra partially sunk after hitting log

NSW Police have attended the scene of incident involving the PS Canberra near the old Echuca-Moama Bridge.

The Riv observed the paddle steamer with a section of its starboard side partially submerged to the south of the bridge around 11.30am on Thursday, September 3.

Victoria Police officers arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and were replaced by members of the NSW Police Force at around 12.05pm.

Murray River Paddlesteamers confirmed that the PS Canberra struck a submerged log, leading to the vessel to start taking on water.

No passengers were on board at the time, and the boat’s crew members secured the vessel.

No injuries were reported, and a salvage operation will begin tomorrow.

Murray River Paddlesteamers director Craig Burgess said focus had turned to returning the vessel to operation.

“Our crew responded quickly and followed all safety procedures, ensuring the vessel was secured with no risk to passengers, crew or the local community,” said Mr Burgess.

“We thank them for their professionalism, and our focus now is on fully understanding what occurred so we can get the PS Canberra back on the water and operating again as soon as possible.“
