Honouring a shared dream, one gyros at a time

He and his mother had shared the dream of running a Greek restaurant in Shepparton from the moment they arrived in the area eight years ago.

Sadly, his mother passed away last year. To honour her, he knew what he had to do.

“I had the memory of her, and when I bought the property here, I thought I had to do something that I know,” he said.

His mum stays close, with a mural of her painted on the wall inside the venue at 179 Corio St.

Coming from a family that has run multiple restaurants overseas for generations, Kosta grew up immersed in the industry.

Now Mezé is his chance to bring his tradition, culture and his mother’s legacy, to life in Shepparton.

The menu leans on authentic, charcoal-grilled meals, with the gyros expected to be the star of the show: a real Greek-style lamb gyros served with chips, tomato and onion.

“We’ve already sold two this morning before opening,” he said.

Trading hours will be from 11am to 9pm on weekdays, and on weekends from 11am to 10.30pm, with hours flexible depending on demand.

Walk-ins and phone orders are welcome, with food delivery services to soon follow.

While the current menu doesn’t cater to all dietary requirements, Kosta says he is open to expanding his menu based on customer feedback.

With genuine charcoal-cooked meat and visible, traditional preparation, Kosta believes the authenticity on display will be what draws Shepparton locals through the door.

“It’s new, traditional and real meat ready to go,” he said.
