NAIDOC Week in Deniliquin began yesterday with a flag‑raising ceremony at the Deniliquin Police Station, marking the start of this year’s celebrations and recognising 50 years of NAIDOC.
The event was led by Sergeant Samara Hynes from Deniliquin Police Station, with a Welcome to Country delivered by Lydia Hamilton.
A smoking ceremony took place prior to proceedings, followed by the raising of the flags by Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre chair Jeanette Crew, Murray River Police District officer Josh Hudson, and local Elder George Day.
The ceremony drew a strong crowd, with representatives from many local organisations.
A community barbecue was held after the ceremony, giving attendees the chance to gather and mark the beginning of NAIDOC Week together.
