Figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency show a decrease in overall criminal incidents in Benalla Rural City, as of March 2026, compared to the previous 12 months.
The number of overall criminal incidents dropped from 1158 in 2025 to 1119 in 2026, a drop of 3.4 per cent.
The number of total offences recorded saw a 16.5 per cent drop in the same time.
Sadly, while overall crime was down, Benalla continues to see an increase in family violence incidents, which are up 8 per cent on the previous year.
On a per capita basis, Benalla Rural City has the sixth-highest rate of family incidents of all LGAs in Victoria.
The five most reported offences in Benalla Rural City were:
- Breech family violence order - 182 incidents, up from 160 the previous year
- Criminal damage - 123 incidents, up from 99 the previous year
- Other thefts - 77 incidents, down from 103 the previous year
- Steal from motor vehicle - 62 incidents, up from 54 the previous year, and
- Breach bail conditions - 53 incidents, up from 33 the previous year.
When it comes to overall crime, on a per capita basis, Benalla fares well against other LGAs.
Out of 79 LGAs across Victoria, only 23 have a lower rate of criminal incidents than Benalla Rural City.
