Still standing: Nagambie’s St Malachy’s church has been opening its doors to parishioners for the past 150 years.

On Sunday, March 15, 1874, St Malachy’s Church in Nagambie opened its doors to the public.

In 2023, 150 years later, the church still welcomes parishioners.

The church’s stone foundation was laid on December 1, 1872, by the Bishop of Melbourne, Right Rev Dr Goold, and Kilmore Parish priest Fr Michael Farrelly.

The church boasts beautiful architecture with materials sourced all over Victoria, such as Geelong freestone quoins and foundations of Avenel granite.

On Sunday, November 19 at 10am, the Bishop of Sandhurst, the Most Rev Shane Mackinlay, will be concelebrating the mass in St Malachy’s Church.

They will bless the plaque on the front of the church to commemorate the occasion.

It will be followed by a small ceremony to rename and dedicate the former presbytery to Kearns Centre, named after the first parish priest, Fr Patrick Kearns.

The mass will be at St Malachy’s Church, 361 High St, Nagambie.
