On February 26, 45 St John Ambulance Victoria volunteers were honoured for their contribution to relief efforts during the 2019-20 bushfires. Among the National Emergency Medal recipients was Campaspe local Donald Pickens.
The National Emergency Medal recognises the tireless efforts of St John Ambulance volunteers in providing support for the community and relieving pressure on emergency services during the Victorian bushfire crisis.
The medals were presented by Andrew Crisp, Victoria’s Emergency Management Commissioner.
Over 491 shifts, St John volunteers contributed 4819 hours to the bushfire response, providing physical and psychological first-aid and support to firefighters at staging areas, the community at relief and evacuation centres and casualties transported out of the fire zone.
St John Ambulance Victoria chief executive Gordon Botwright said they were immensely proud of all volunteers for their exceptional dedication and unwavering commitment to serving the Victorian community during the bushfire crisis.
“The National Emergency Medal is a well-deserved recognition of their tireless efforts in providing critical support to those in need,“ Mr Botwright said.
“Their bravery and commitment to the service of humanity embody the spirit of St John Ambulance, and we are grateful for their continued contributions to society.”
The National Emergency Medal presentation ceremony, held at the Victoria Police Academy Chapel in Glen Waverley, was attended by 158 guests, including the Federal Member of Parliament for Chisholm, Dr Carina Garland.
