Bub Kelly, known as the “Queen of the Hotplate”, has been selected as one of 90 local barbecue legends through Bunnings’ Legend of the Tongs campaign.
Over 18 weeks of the AFL season, the campaign spotlighted individuals who kept their Aussie rules football clubs running, one snag at a time.
Bub has become a much-loved figure around the club for her tireless work behind the barbecue, helping raise vital funds.
This spotlight has put Bub in the running to head to the AFL Grand Final, with eight finalists from the 90 local legends to be chosen for the special trip.
Two of these eight spots will be decided by the public in a community choice voting round, while the remaining six finalists will be selected by a panel of Bunnings and AFL judges.
The eight finalists will receive a trip for two to the final, where one will be crowned the 2026 Legend of the Golden Tongs and win $25,000 worth of Bunnings products and materials for their club.
Bunnings head of community sponsorship and events Michelle Walter said she hoped the community choice vote would ignite some friendly competition.
“We’re excited to introduce the public vote this year, it’s a perfect opportunity to showcase our volunteers who play a huge role in keeping community footy thriving – we’re excited to see the nation get behind their legends,” she said.
“We’ve recognised 90 Legends of the Tongs across the country, and we can’t wait to see who our eight incredible finalists are this year.”
Voting will close on Sunday, August 30.
During the voting period, a live Top 10 leaderboard will update daily, tracking which barbecue legends are climbing the ladder thanks to community support.
