A highlight on the Seymour-based band’s calendar is its annual concert, which many band members, whether new or established, look forward to as an opportunity to show off their skills.
Mitchell Shire Concert Band secretary Elizabeth Bedggood said, while the band performed at community events such as Australia Day celebrations, the Mother’s Day fun run, Seymour carols and Anzac Day, the annual concert was dedicated solely to the band.
“Concerts and public performances are very important to band members because they offer a chance to showcase their skills to family, friends and the wider community,” Ms Bedggood said.
“Having a performance to work towards gives the band focus during weekly rehearsals ... It brings together the instruction and development that Eric, our music director, has invested throughout the year.
“The concert is also an opportunity to encourage members of the audience to consider joining us either as established musicians or learners taking their first step.”
Each year, the concert is made possible thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers who bring the band to life, as well as donations from local businesses.
“All band members are volunteers who travel from areas including Pheasant Creek, Flowerdale, Reedy Creek, Avenel, Wallan, Kilmore, Darraweit Guim, Broadford and Seymour — where rehearsals are held,” Ms Bedggood said.
“We are grateful for a donation from the Community Bank of Wallan, Kilmore and Broadford, which helps us keep ticket prices low: $15 for adults, $5 for children under 16 and $30 for families.”
This year, the concert promises sounds from sci-fi film franchises including Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who.
Ms Bedggood said there would also be “newer additions”, such as music from Taylor Swift, and songs such as Trailblazer and Epic Gaming Themes.
“The program will also feature a few favourite marches, and more,” she said.
Audience members, too, have the voice of guest vocalist Sherryn McDonald, as well as three performances from the learner band, to look forward to.
“A highlight will be the learner band’s first performance in front of an audience. We are very proud of their progress because their lessons only began at the start of the year,” Ms Bedggood said.
“Guest vocalist Sherryn McDonald, who is from the Shepparton area, will perform traditional favourites, including Send in the Clowns and Someone to Watch Over Me.
“Sherryn is a passionate secondary school educator who enjoys working with local musicians to create special performance projects.”
The annual concert will commence at 2pm at the Seymour College Arts Centre, on the corner of Loco and Anglesey Sts.
