Most states deliver majority 'no' vote in voice poll

More than half of Australians have rejected a referendum to enshrine an Indigenous voice in the constitution, as vote counting continues.

At 9pm AEDT, the national tally stood at 57.8 per cent for the 'no' vote and 42.2 per cent for 'yes'.

Queensland was recording the strongest 'no' vote at 66 per cent.

The ACT was the only jurisdiction where the 'yes' vote was ahead.

In the national capital, 63 per cent voted 'yes' and 37 per cent voted 'no'.

The 'no' vote in NSW was sitting on 58 per cent, while 53 per cent of Victorian voters rejected the referendum question.

The South Australian 'no' vote was 63 per cent, while 60 per cent of Tasmanians voted against the constitutional change.

Only 40 per cent of Northern Territorians voted 'yes'.

Early votes in the voice referendum showed the 'no' case was ahead in four states.

Votes had not yet been counted in Western Australia.
