There are 24 LGAs in Victoria that are currently eligible for the free vaccine.
JE is a rare but potentially serious infection that continues to be detected in Victoria and other south-eastern Australian states, spreading to people through bites of infected mosquitoes.
Most people experience no or mild symptoms.
This year, high-risk areas in regional Victoria are experiencing a prolonged mosquito season due to recent flooding in parts of northern Victoria.
In addition to the eligibility being simplified, the JE vaccination program has been expanded temporarily.
People aged two months or older that plan to visit any of the eligible high risk LGAs in Victoria or interstate for any planned outdoor recreation are also eligible until July 31.
Outdoor recreation activities include hiking, camping, caravanning, fishing, boating and hunting.
People at an increased risk of JE regardless of their LGA continue to remain eligible for a free vaccine.
With no specific treatment available, it is important to stay protected by getting vaccinated if eligible and following mosquito-bite prevention advice.
