For horticulture student Bryn Wedgeford, choosing Bendigo TAFE meant taking an interest that supported his wellbeing and giving it the opportunity to become something more.
A new direction takes root
After completing a degree in earth sciences, Bryn found himself gravitating towards a different path — gardening.
Initially, gardening provided a positive outlet for his mental health. As his interest grew, Bryn began to see the possibility of turning it into a career.
“Horticulture is all about life, the beauty of nature, and people living together with the natural world,” Bryn said.
Wanting to develop the practical knowledge required to work in the industry, Bryn enrolled in the Certificate III in Horticulture (AHC30722) at Bendigo TAFE.
Returning to study and beginning a new professional direction can feel daunting. For Bryn, the connection his teachers created with their students made the experience both enjoyable and encouraging.
“The teachers really put an effort into making a connection with the students, which really matters,” Bryn said.
Through his course, Bryn has been able to build his horticultural knowledge, explore different areas of the industry and take practical steps towards working professionally in the field.
His experience demonstrates how an existing interest can become the beginning of an entirely new career when it is supported by practical training and teachers who understand their industry.
Practical training for real careers
Bryn’s story is one of many at Bendigo TAFE.
Across central Victoria, students of different ages and backgrounds are developing the skills to begin their first careers, change direction, return to employment or strengthen the knowledge they already use in the workplace.
