An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has hit Japan's northeastern region, prompting a tsunami advisory for waves up to one metre from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The quake struck off the coast of Aomori prefecture at 1.44pm AEDT, days after a bigger magnitude earthquake hit the same region.
The tremor on Friday measured four on Japan's 1-7 seismic intensity scale.
On Monday, a 7.5-magnitude quake shook the eastern coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main island of Honshu. The quake prompted orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate and tsunami warnings that hours later were downgraded to advisories.
