A win could have almost locked in a top six spot, but the heartbreaking 14.7 (91) to 10.15 (75) defeat leaves the Tigers in the lurch, needing some luck and strong performances in the final fortnight to make the post-season.
The big story before the game was a pair of huge ins from the Tigers’ injured list, with a major debut and return confirmed in team selection.
Marquee off-season recruit and 20-game AFL defender Marty Hore suited up for his first hit-out since joining the club and rehab from a knee injury, coming off the bench.
A critical attacking piece also returned to the line-up, as tall forward Mitch Cricelli played his first senior game since round six 2025, recovering from back surgery.
Starting at full-forward Cricelli showed what the Tigers have been missing in his absence, immediately making an impact with five goals.
Rochy had mostly been attacking by committee up to this point, Hugh Hamilton (27 goals from 10 games) and Felix Fogarty (23 from 15) the scoring leaders.
At Princess Park in Shepparton, neither side could separate itself in the first quarter, the goals flying back and forth throughout.
Rochester edged the term by minor scores, leading by four points at the first change, and looked to build with the first goal of the second, but the Swans had an answer.
Four straight majors sailed through the Swans’ way, before the Tigers finally found a response, finishing the half with two of their own to cut a significant deficit to four points.
The sides again traded goals early in the third, but the Swans got on top later in the term and kicked two, leaving Rochy with work to do down 12 at the final change.
Inaccuracy in front of the sticks was proving an issue for the Tigers, entering the fourth 7.12 and that trend didn’t improve much on the final scorecard.
Rochy found the first goal of the term, but the Swans followed with two straight to get back out by 17.
A strong passage of play saw the Tigers kick 2.2 and cut the margin to three points near the start of time on, but the Swans finished off the game with two majors to win.
Now in eighth, although only two points back from the six, Rochester likely needs to win both remaining games to have a chance at finals.
Hosting struggling Euroa this weekend is a game the Tigers would expect to win, but the same can’t be said about their final opponent, 15-1 Shepparton, which Rochy takes on away at Deakin Reserve.
There are limited permutations that could see the Tigers qualify without defeating the Bears, but they would need a favour from lower table sides Mansfield or Benalla against some of their rivals for that to eventuate.
