An overcast afternoon was appreciated by all bowlers with the hope of rain on the way.
The Division 4 Diggers won 2 of 3 rinks and overall had a 19 shot win.
Rod Reid’s team of Graham Gordon, Sandra Hill and Peter Thommers won 14 of 21 ends, with Thommers bowling superbly again as third.
For 9 ends they held Rochester to just 2 shots on the card. Rochester however managed 11 shots to 3 over the next 8 ends, but it was too late for them and the Diggers took the win, 17-13.
Drawing the ditch rink, Ron Marchetti’s team of Jo Chick, Archie Webster and Neville Austin had a slow start.
Not scoring until the 5th end with a 1, it was not looking good. The Diggers rallied and by the 15th end scores were 10-13.
The opposition skipper was superb and only allowed RSL another 1 and the final score was 11-20.
Best rink of the day was Niels Hilton’s team of Jake Glenn, Danny Stanmore and Craig Taylor. Glenn led superbly and was intimidating all day.
Stanmore followed up with brilliant bowls to assist Taylor who was magnificent.
The Rochester team skipper was often heard calling out “helllppp” to his team.
Hilton sealed the deal and his rink not only won 14 ends but collected the honours of a perfect “8” on the 2nd end. To add salt to that wound, they followed it up with a 4 and later a 5.
Rochester could not match the Diggers form, and after 21 ends Hilton’s rink celebrated a fantastic 35-11 win.
The final overall score of 63-44 gave RSL Diggers 14 points and places them 4th on the Division 4 ladder with a total of 32 points.
Congratulations to Jo Chick who won the inaugural RSL Diggers “Best on Ground” Award.
This award is decided upon by the opposition teams skippers over the 3 rinks and will be given to the best player at Diggers home games.
Division 4 Diggers are at home again this Saturday and will play bottom of the ladder Lockington.
