On a picture perfect morning at Kings Park, with a healthy crowd in attendance as Seymour celebrated its sixth annual Sarah’s Day fundraiser for Breast Cancer Network Australia, the Lions and Bulldogs went toe-to-toe in a huge top four clash, and couldn’t be split at the final whistle, tied at 43-43 in the first draw of the season.
With a home court — and crowd — advantage, Seymour got off to a flying start, with Ally Black and Ellie Fuhrmeister combining for nine goals inside the shooting circle to hand the Lions a slender one-goal advantage at quarter time.
But Charlette Gray turned things in Tatura’s favour with a brilliant scoring run in the second term, alongside Julia Clarke, with the pair going on an 11-2 run to hand the Bulldogs a lead that got out to seven goals at one stage, before Seymour pegged it back to four at the main break.
Gray proved a formidable force after the break also, scoring all bar one of the Bulldogs’ goals in the third term as the lead was stretched to six by three-quarter time, and it appeared as though Tatura would take the spoils.
The Bulldogs made things even harder for the Lions with a sharp burst to start the final term, pushing the margin to a game-high eight goals, but Seymour managed to lift across the court, firing home six unanswered goals to wipe away the majority of the deficit with a few minutes remaining.
Both finals contenders went goal for goal until Seymour, through Ellie Fuhrmeister, put three consecutive goals on the board, drawing level in the dying stages, until Julia Clarke came up clutch and handed Tatura back the lead at 43-42.
Ruby Martin was the hero for Seymour, however, with her effort finding the bottom of the net in the final seconds to tie the contest, splitting the points with the Bulldogs and ensuring the two remain in third and fourth spot on the ladder.
Casey Adamson was named best on court by the umpires for her work in the midcourt, joined by Rosie O’Sullivan at wing attack, while Martin also got the nod in the best players for her fourth-quarter heroics.
The draw leaves Seymour at 4-1-1 for the year. The Lions will look to make it five wins this weekend, although they come up against the arguable premiership favourites in Shepparton, with the Bears yet to be truly tested over four quarters.
