A promising start against Avenel quickly unravelled as Girgarre ended up 20-point losers in round 10 of Kyabram District League football.
Travelling to Avenel Recreation Reserve, the Roos hopped to a narrow but reassuring two-point lead at the first break after kicking three goals through the quarter.
Despite nailing 4.5 in the second quarter, Girgarre found itself behind the eight-ball by half-time, trailing Avenel by the same margin they were up by the quarter before.
The game began to slip away for Girgarre (1.1) as Avenel (5.6) delivered another productive stretch in front of goal to extend its lead out to 25.
Josh Temple led the way for his team in the loss with Jorge Maxwell, Joshua Mackrell, Thomas Werner, Kyle Mcleod and Luke Chapman filling out Girgarre’s best-on-ground list.
The Kangaroos managed a fight-back of sorts in the final frame, sending 4.3 through the sticks, but the Swans (3.4) did just enough to collect their fifth win of the season and move closer to finals contention.
As for Girgarre, round 10 was its seventh consecutive loss, still with just one win under its belt at the halfway point of the season.
It won’t get any easier for the Kangaroos in round 11 when they host fourth-place Nagambie, but will have an easier time of it in the following weeks.
