While many Goulburn Valley residents will pack bags and fly like bats out of hell for the King’s Birthday long weekend, hundreds — and their bats — are set to descend on Mooroopna for the Softball Victoria Masters Championships.
It’s the ninth time the Fruit Salad City has been given hosting rights to the championships.
And it’s expected to be the sweetest one yet.
More than 570 players, 150 umpires, coaches, scorers and supporters from throughout Victoria and beyond will line the freshly raked and lined diamonds at Mooroopna Recreation Reserve from June 7-9 in a fast-pitching, big-hitting spectacle.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali said securing the tournament for another year was a home run for the region.
“To facilitate the matches, 11 softball diamonds will be set up at the Mooroopna Recreation Reserve,” Sali said.
“We are looking forward to welcoming players, officials and spectators to Greater Shepparton for the championships.
“These events strengthen our reputation as the leading sporting and events capital of regional Australia, while keeping our local economy strong and businesses thriving.”
The number of participating teams has jumped up by six from last year’s event, with the 2025 edition to feature the likes of Brooke Penfold and Melanie Roche, both of whom have represented Australia at multiple Olympic Games.
With a wide range of age classes and divisions on show, the upcoming tournament will also double as prep for the July National Championships for the over-35 men’s and women’s teams.
Softball Victoria state operations manager Jo Schutt said all systems were go for a bumper, bat-swinging event at Mooroopna.
“This year we have 44 teams participating, up from 39 last year, which is the highest number we’ve seen for this event,” she said.
“Our community loves bringing their families and friends to Greater Shepparton each year for a fantastic weekend of sport and connection.
“Many players have been involved for decades and with women’s grades from A to F and men’s from A to C, there’s something for everyone – from seasoned athletes to newcomers.”
